Arizona is known for boasting some of the best hiking trails in the Nation. Here are some popular hiking destinations in the Phoenix Area.
Camelback Mountain Trail:
Camelback Mountain, one of Arizona’s most popular hiking destinations, named for its resemblance to the head and humps of a resting camel. There are two trails on Camelback Mountain: The Cholla Trail and Echo Canyon Trail with an Elevation of 2,704 feet.
Difficulty of the Cholla Trail is rated Moderate-Extreme with an average time for completing in about 1.5-2 hours round-trip for hikers in good physical condition. The distance to the top of the summit is 1.5 miles with stunning 360-degree views of Phoenix Arizona!
The Echo Canyon trail is rated an Extreme hike with an average time of about 1.5 hours-2 hours round-trip. The distance to the top of the summit is 1.33 miles with breathtaking 360-degree views of the valley of the sun.
Because of Echo Canyon’s location parking can be somewhat difficult, luckily the parking lot at the base of Echo Canyon was recently expanded to accommodate more parked vehicles. There is no parking at the base of the Cholla Trailhead, but there is parking all along the side of the road. Parking is located along the East and West sides of Invergordon Road.
Piestewa Peak Trail:
Piestewa Peak is the second highest point in the Phoenix Mountains with an elevation of 2,610 feet. With a Difficulty rating of Moderate-Difficult, Piestewa Peak on average takes anywhere from 45 minutes- several hours depending on your physical condition.
The distance to the top of the summit is 1.9 miles with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of Phoenix Arizona! Piestewa Peak does have paved parking lots, drinking water and restrooms at the trailhead area. On Average 4,000 to 10,000 hikers per week will trek the Summit Trail so parking can be limited.
Dreamy Draw Nature Trail:
Dreamy Draw Recreation Area offers an array of many trails and boasts dozens of miles of trails to enjoy the glory of the Sonoran Desert in relative solitude. The Dreamy Draw Nature Trail elevation is between 1402-1555 feet.
With a Difficulty rating of Easy to Moderate, Dreamy Draw Nature Trail and the surrounding trails provide hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers with a little more seclusion than the busier trails like Piestewa Peak and Camelback Mountain.
The distance of Dreamy Draw Nature Trail is 1.5 miles to summit with an average time of 45 minutes to an hour round trip. A large paved parking lot, unpaved staging area with hitching racks, horse trough, drinking water, and restrooms are available.
